Michael Klahr Jewish Family Services' (KJFS) Hanukkah Lights began as a small student project to bring winter clothes and toys to some of the families visiting our food pantry and has grown to be one of our most successful programs. Together we have helped to serve over 600 children in the greater Portland community since 2013! We are now ready to begin matching 2019 donor families with wish lists and are very much hoping you will help us by participating in Hanukkah Lights.
We have changed our program a bit and I wanted to fill you in on the adjustments and why they were made:
Historically, families have provided KJFS staff and volunteers with a list of clothing needs and wishes for toys and other supplies. The outpouring of love and generosity from the community has been incredible and we’ve been able to meet almost every need each time. However, as our program has grown and changed, we have continued to have ongoing conversations with recipient families about what they see as their highest priority needs. We have learned most families are looking for support in providing winter clothing essentials over toys and games. I have also spoken with parents who want the ability to purchase the “fun” stuff for their children themselves – it’s a sense of pride and a moment of connection they can share with their child that rises above the daily stress of living under financial constraints.
And so, for Hanukkah Lights 2019, we are asking for community support to purchase winter jackets, snow pants, boots, gloves, and hats for children ranging in ages from 2 weeks to 17 years. We hope you will join us to spread warmth and light!
For our 2019 season, we are aiming to provide winter clothing for 200 children in 62 families.
