This talk will provide an overview of Dr. Huether’s book project, Sounding Trauma, Mediating Memory: Holocaust Economy and the Politics of Sound, which examines Holocaust representation specifically for its sonic qualities, including musical underscoring, audio guides, vocal affect, and the sound of language. Dr. Huether will address dynamic strategies and implications of music and sound in contemporary Holocaust memory, including Hollywood films, museums and memorial sites, audio guides, and survivor testimony.

 

Dr. Kathryn Agnes Huether received her PhD in Musicology from the University of Minnesota, during which she was the recipient of the University of Minnesota’s Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship and the Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowship, the Auschwitz Jewish Center Fellowship, Middlebury College’s Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace, and USHMM’s Summer Graduate Student Research Fellowship. During the 2021-2022 academic year, she was the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and American University’s postdoctoral fellow in Holocaust studies. Dr. Huether holds a second Master’s degree in Religious Studies from the University of Colorado, and a Bachelor’s in Violin Performance and Religious Studies from Montana State University.
