Hanukkah: Hebrew name means “Dedication.” What’s it about? Hanukkah is an 8-day minor holiday that commemorates the Jewish recapture and rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in 164 BCE. Foods: Fried foods, especially potato pancakes (latkes), and jelly doughnuts (sufganiyot). Activities: The main observance is lighting the candles in a ceremonial lamp called a hanukkiah or Hanukkah menorah. Playing with a top called a dreidel is another fun tradition. Symbols: Menorah, candles, dreidel, gelt. Greeting: “Happy Hanukkah!”
