Drop by the Maine Jewish Museum for our new monthly community coffee hour! You can chat with Executive Director Dawn LaRochelle and Curator in Residence Nancy Davidson as you browse the museum and our current art exhibitions. This month, Portland’s inaugural Director of Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Umaru Balde, will be joining us as our special guest. Originally from Guinea-Bissau, Umaru moved to Egypt for school but fled to Israel after refusing to participate in discrimination against non-Muslims. He attended Hebrew University and speaks fluent Hebrew, as well as 12 other languages! In addition to his ground-breaking work for the City of Portland, Umaru is a doctoral candidate at the University of Northern Iowa. The coffee will be strong, the crullers sweet, and the conversation stimulating. Join us!
