A message from Campaign Chair, Mickey Haas:

Each fall the Jewish Community Alliance launches its Annual Campaign - a time when we each have the opportunity to demonstrate our support for our community, both here and abroad. Donations to our Campaign support a wide range of activities including Jewish education, rental assistance for needy families, healthcare advocacy for elderly community members, summer camp experiences in Maine, Jewish education for young people and adults, and community activites and programs. This past year has tested many of us like never before. We've seen a once in a lifetime global financial crisis that has effected many of us, probably for years. This year's Campaign will be a very trying one. I assure you that for each one of us that's hurting there's another Jew, whether here in Portland or around the world that's hurting more. Later this year you'll be asked to give to our Campaign. Never before have we needed you like this year. The challenges we face our real and there are so many in need. Whether it's a single mother needing food and rental assistance from Jewish Family Services, or a teen in Israel needing a mentor, your gift this year will have the truest meaning of Tikkun Olam - repairing the world. This year, your support will count more than ever.

When I was a child, I watched my grandparents and parents get involved with Federation I've realized that it's not only my responsibility to be involved, it's expected of me to give back. For the last 6 years I've been on the UJC National Young Leadership Cabinet. As I enter my last year on Cabinet I've seen how our work has helped those in need. Whether it be bringing a plane full of "Olim" (new immigrants) from Ethiopia to Israel or bringing a meal to the poor in St. Petersburg, Russia. The work of the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) is truly amazing. These are where the majority of your overseas dollars go to work. On a local and international level, support of the JCA 2009 Campaign means providing frood and heet to those most in need, local Jewish education for our children, and support for Israel at a time when it needs it most.

I want to thank our 2009 Campaign Cabinet for dedicating their time to this incredible effort; know that together, as a community, we will have a very successful Campaign.

I feel very fortunate to have wonderful family and friends, a good job and to live in a terrific community like Portland. I hope you'll join me in these trying times and from our little corner in the world, let's make the world a better place.
